John Deverell, CBE
Founder and author of The Prepared Mind
I lead www.thepreparedmind.net, advising on risk, crisis and leadership. Our offerings include plans, workshops and talks. We work in the UK and abroad.
My own previous business experience included two years on the executive leadership team of Invensys plc, a FTSE 100 multinational - and then two years with M:Communications in the City of London. There I founded Keyhaven, advising clients on crisis mitigation and associated media issues.
Before that I was a soldier. After years on the front line in various parts of the world I was appointed to be an instructor at the Army’s command and staff college. Subsequently I worked as a senior planner in the British military’s Permanent Joint Headquarters. After serving as defence attaché in the British embassies in Saudi Arabia and Yemen over the period of 9/11 and the operations that followed, I was appointed deputy director of the US-led Iraq Survey Group, disproving the intelligence on WMD in the aftermath of the invasion of Iraq in 2003.
On my return to Britain I commanded at brigade and then divisional level, and then worked in our Ministry of Defence as Director of Defence Diplomacy. My final role before entering the commercial world led me to live in Ramallah where I was the first British government servant to be based in the Palestinian Territories since the end of the British Mandate.
All in all, I have spent some 15 years working in the Middle East and have served and lived in many other countries besides. I have a University of Cambridge MPhil in International Relations and a diploma in Advanced Negotiation and Mediation Skills from Kent University. My charitable interests include the church, the Middle East and disabled former members of the armed services.
“John is an inspirational communicator whom I found myself quoting twice within an hour of hearing him speak.”
“It's not the crisis but the way you handle the crisis that gets you in the end.”
Katie Perrior - Times newspaper 17 Feb ’18 – re Oxfam crisis
A crisis threatens your organisation’s reputation and interests. It can be caused by internal or external events. Leakage of sensitive information, dishonesty, negligence and many other causes can contribute.
That crises happen is not a surprise. Rather, it is their nature and timing that catches organisations unawares. Crises and the events that cause them can therefore be termed “predictable surprises”.

A crisis threatens your organisation’s reputation and interests and can be caused by internal or external events. A poor or slow response will magnify the initial effect - and misperceptions can put you in the firing line without it even being your fault.
